For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He carried a message from his company commander to battalion headquarters, and then returned through an intense hostile barrage to inform his company commander that the message had been safely delivered. He set a magnificent example throughout the action, and repeatedly carried messages under the most intense fire.
