It is a wound stripe awarded for each occasion wounded; from late 1917/early 1918 I think but stand to be corrected.

Thanx for the fast response Squirrel

Can you also tell me what are the small chevrons worn by the officers in the rank to his rear?

Overseas chevrons, one for each year spent abroad. They are blue in colour, except the one for August-November 1914 (if I'm not mistaken) which was red.

Nice Tank Corps picture.

Thanx to all - that means that the Captain could be tracked down (i.e. he must have served in France in 1914.15 and therefore have got a Mons star) . Should he be wearing medal ribbons?

Saint - the photo is courtesy of Jack Rossiter's granddaughter

The Overseas Stripes could be for 1916, 1917 and 1918 so he may not necessarily have had a 1914 or 1914-15 Star entitlement.

Thanx for the advice -

On closer look he is wearing four stripes - when would he have deployed?

Could it have been to the eastern Med or were they limited to France and Flanders?

The Overseas Stripes were awarded for '14, '15 ''16, '17 and '18 and as far as I am aware, service in any theatre counted.

steady on! a lot of assumptions here about date of photo.

Overseas chevron intro: Jan 1918, back dated

wounded badge intro: mid 1916

1914 star intro: late 1917 [ribbon soon issued]

1914-1915 star intro: early 1919.

This should give photo-daters something to chew on ..... work it out for yourself!

By the way, I believe it is a mistake to assume that a '1914' overseas service chevron implies possession of 'Mons Star'.

as ever, many thanks

when would the 1918 chevron have been issued?

I am away from my sources but I have an idea that service 'within' a year qualified, rather than serving a whole year. By that token a man holding 14,15,16,17 presumably qualified on 1 Jan 1918.

Look up, someone, please?
