Uncle George Posted 8 February , 2015 Share Posted 8 February , 2015 You`ve sussed the boxer connection, but don`t go down Fleet Street, and stay away from the Germans. He is Daniel Daly. EDIT: I see it was Daly who shouted, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" to the men in his company prior to charging at Belleau Wood. I knew the quote, but not the name. Wigwhammer Posted 8 February , 2015 Share Posted 8 February , 2015 EDIT: I see it was Daly who shouted, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" to the men in his company prior to charging at Belleau Wood. I knew the quote, but not the name. That echoes what Frederick the Great is supposed to have furiously shouted after fleeing Prussian grenadiers late in the day at the battle of Kolin, 1757: Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben? (Dogs - do you want to live for ever?). There's no hard evidence he actually said it, but the anecdote goes back well before the GW. EDIT: I believe the earliest version was Ihr verfluchten Racker, wollt ihr denn ewig leben? (verfluchte Racker = damned scoundrels)

Indeed so, uncle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Daly Major General Butler described Daly as, "The fightin'est Marine I ever knew!" His Wiki page is well worth a read. Made me wonder if "Dan Dare" was based on him. I`m guessing that we are looking at a post ww1 picture of your brave, judging by the headband. EDIT: Author of a series of novels about Tecumseh - original name Erhard Wittek A very good guess, but no. Our man broke with the Nazis and conspired with British intelligence. neverforget Posted 8 February , 2015 Share Posted 8 February , 2015 The break with the Nazis does not appear to have lasted.Ahh....after he had just gone up in my estimation as well.Further hint for my chap. Very well known, he tried to enlist, but was turned down because of his age. Undaunted, he scraped a few lads together, got in, and ended up commanding a battalion. Briefly, from memory, he was an England international Rugby player who raised a company of men and joined a sportsman`s btn, which he ended up commanding. Fattyowls Posted 8 February , 2015 Share Posted 8 February , 2015 Edgar Mobbs raised a company for the Northamptonshire Rgt. and was killed at Zillebeke on I think the first day of the third battle of Ypres; he is remembered on the Menin Gate. Highly revered in Northampton and beyond. Hope you don't mind me trespassing on your manor so to speak NF. Pete.

This is giving me more trouble than I expected, so a desperate guess: Stephan von Gröning? (Eddie Chapman's handler who despised National Socialism and, it is suspected, realised what was going on and used Chapman to feed real intelligence back to London - there appears to be an absolute dearth of pictures of him....) If not, another clue please! Cheers Colin
