wroclaw Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 The inscription seen in the picture is carved in rock some 10 Kms north west of Ramallah. Can anyone recognize the unit/formation to which who ever carved this belonged to? Is the Latin term directly relates to a certain unit, or was it a slogan often used? In what periods did this unit served in this front? Tnks

michaeldr Posted 20 April , 2009 Share Posted 20 April , 2009 Gal, The map section below shows top left hand (north-west) corner of the British OH map for 'The Defence of Jerusalem' and the British line as at 4.00 am 30th December 1917. Part of Ramallah can just be seen on the right hand side. Looking at the OH [June '17 to end – Part I, pages 283 >] in this battle the 263rd Brigade RFA were supporting the 'Left Group,' which comprised the 29th & 30th Brigades (part of the 10th Division, as pointed out by Steve) The Brief Record of Service for the 10th Div, as given in 'The Advance of the EEF etc etc.,' states that operations recommenced on March 9th, 1918, "After a winter spent in holding the positions gained" – plenty of time for idle hands to do a bit of rock carving, winter weather permitting.
