dink999 Posted 13 May , 2013 Share Posted 13 May , 2013 (edited) I have recently completed the indexing of all the soldiers whose photograph appears in "The Graphic". The index includes various details about individuals, family groups and small/large soldiers groups and totals some 7500 names The names have now been uploaded into the Gloucestershire Archives online cataloguehttp://ww3.glouceste...sqCmd=Index.tcl If you click on Search Local Studies Only and then enter Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic in the finding reference box(See below) and click Search you will get a page with Click to see overview of records on. Click on Overview of records and you will get the full A to Z list of names. If you then click on the number next to the surname you will see further details about the soldier as shown with Private Frank Adams below. You can of course enter a surname as well in the AnyText box to reduce the number of search resultsAnyText Author Title ISBN Date FindingRef Format HeldAt Finding Ref Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic Held At Gloucestershire Archives Title ADAMS, Frank M, Private, Date 1915 EnrichingChars b&w Format Photograph Source Cheltenham Chronicle & Gloucestershire Graphic, 04 December Notes 10th Gloucesters, Wounded in the knee at Loos 27 Sept 1915 now in White Cross Hospital, Warrington Location of photograph not known Lived in Northleach, The Index has now been uploaded to the Gloucestershire Remembers WW1 site within the Archives website at https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/archives/working-with-us/partnership-projects/gloucestershire-remembers-ww1/help-with-your-research-into-ww1/information-sheets-about-gloucestershire-in-ww1-compiled-by-other-researchers/ and the complete list of 7523 names can be downloaded as an excel file both in chronological order or in A to Z form. and will look like the following. museumtom Posted 13 May , 2013 Share Posted 13 May , 2013 I could find names but not photographs, are they online also? Is this a catalogue of photographs available to purchase? Cheers. Tom.
dink999 Posted 13 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 13 May , 2013 Sorry, no the archives are not that organised. I do have the full page images of the pictorial paper, so could easily find the photo of someone for you Dave
museumtom Posted 13 May , 2013 Share Posted 13 May , 2013 I am a bit confused Dave, sorry about that, I do it a lot. What you are saying is that the names on that site are soldiers photographs that you have available, and will send them to whoever requests them as they are not yet online? Will they be online in the future? Will they be free? Sorry for all the questions, old geezers like me can get away with it. Kind regards. Tom. dink999 Posted 13 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 13 May , 2013 Tom, Yes your correct, and the way the Archives work I don't think the images will be online anytime soon, if ever and if the were the Archives would not send them out for free. I'm happy to send an image free to any one who requests one Dave

Kate Wills Posted 13 May , 2013 Share Posted 13 May , 2013 Hello Dave, I wonder if you can help me. I have used the search in combination with the British Newspaper Archive, which has digitised editions of the Cheltenham Chronicle up to 1950. I entered 'concert party' into the search box via your link, which returned 37 results. So far so good; but none of the results concur with the available copies of the digitised Cheltenham Chronicle. Here are three examples: FindingRef Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic Title CAMPBELL, R J, Staff-Sergt, Date 1917 Format Photograph Source Cheltenham Chronicle & Gloucestershire Graphic, 05 May Notes R.A.M.C. I'd really appreciate your help here, as the search results are very valuable.
dink999 Posted 13 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 13 May , 2013 Hello, The Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic was a weekly pictorial sister publication to the Cheltenham Chronicle newspaper that you refer to that is being digitised on the British Newspaper Archive. The Graphic as it is better known locally was published from 1901-1942. Only very occasionally were articles/photos linked with either publication. For example the image of Pioneer W H DENHAM refers to a letter published in the Chronicle. I found the article and recorded both for reference. So you are unlikely to find many references in the Cheltenham Chronicle to the soldiers photos that I have indexed. Hope that explains things a little better Dave FindingRef Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic HeldAt Gloucestershire Archives Title DENHAM, W H, Pioneer, Date 1916 EnrichingChars b&w Format Photograph Source Cheltenham Chronicle & Gloucestershire Graphic, 16 September Notes R.E. ex 5th Gloucesters, Letter in the Chronicle referring to picture published Photographed in Somewhere abroad Abode not known, FindingRef Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic HeldAt Gloucestershire Archives Title DENHAM, W H, Pioneer, Date 1916 EnrichingChars b&w Format Photograph Source Cheltenham Chronicle & Gloucestershire Graphic, 30 September Notes R.E. ex 5th Gloucesters, Pictured with 3 other named ex 5th Gloucesters Photographed in Somewhere abroad Lived in Cheltenham,
simon2 Posted 14 May , 2013 Share Posted 14 May , 2013 Thats quite a feat Dave. Certainly helps with with research time. How quickly could you supply a photo of each page of the publication. I live 5 mins away from the Archives and sometimes have to wait a week or two to find time to get over there. Simon.

nicktamarensis Posted 17 May , 2013 Share Posted 17 May , 2013 Hello, I have just spotted your thread after posting something about a relative I have just discovered through researching my family on Ancestry. I note from the Cheltenham and Gloucester records there is a photo of the man pictured with his brothers held within their archive file. Is it possible for you to scan the pic from your own record? He is LEONARD HENRY COX, 26, Pte. 47215 2nd Bn. Essex Regt. K.I.A. 1/9/1918. I realise you must be inundated with requests of this nature but it would be quite something if in a sense I could 'bring back to life' someone who up to now has been quite forgotten. Best regards, Nick.
