Guest Biplane pilot Posted 27 February , 2004 Share Posted 27 February , 2004 Within the past few weeks I recall seeing an image of the cover of Middlebrook's "First Day On the Somme" (Penguin edition) that identified the soldiers depicted. I thought it was here but it may have been another Great War site. I only joined here early this month but an extensive search has produced nothing. Terry Carter Posted 27 February , 2004 Share Posted 27 February , 2004 If its the same cover as the original hardback edition the picture used was a 'still 'from the Somme film and it is a group of Royal Warwicks at rest eating from their mess tins (2nd Bn I think) Terry
Ron Posted 27 February , 2004 Share Posted 27 February , 2004 The latest edition has the famous IWM photograph of a soldier carrying a casualty out of a trench. Ron
Bryn_Hammond Posted 27 February , 2004 Share Posted 27 February , 2004 This is a still from the Battle of the Somme film discussed here: http://www.1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?s...opic=63&hl=film Read the posting by Roger Smither, Head of the IWM Film Archive, on this topic for good background info.
