Terry Carter Posted 29 February , 2004 Share Posted 29 February , 2004 I know this subject has been covered in the past. But what happened to the soldiers who signed up for 8 years on the formation of the Territorials on 1 April, 1908. His service was up in 1 April, 1916. I am sure I have seen some (and made photocopies... cannot find) of some documents/ discharge papers relating to a soldier of one of the Warwickshire Territorial units whose time was up when he was in the front line. He went home and worked in munitions. Has anyone out there got a copy of such paperwork that they could scan and send me? Cheers Terry
Muerrisch Posted 29 February , 2004 Share Posted 29 February , 2004 Broadly speaking a soldier was free to go before the Military Service Act of c. June 1916 if he fulfilled his original obligations, plus, in the case of regulars, an extra year "for the King" if a war was on or if the soldier was overseas. A soldier thus discharged was however liable for call up after June 1916 if young enough and fit enough. The devil is in the detail though, as ever.
