Peter Beckett Posted 4 March , 2004 Share Posted 4 March , 2004 Can any Pals help with this one? Henry Vallins died 18 March 1920 and buried in Orpington (All Saints) Churchyard. Private No G/82174 Middlesex Regiment then transferred to the Labour Corps No 155028. This is from the CWGC site. Trying to find out for a friend anything regarding his military service. Ivor Lee Posted 4 March , 2004 Share Posted 4 March , 2004 Peter Sorry but this is not going to be an easy one to trace unless his service record survived. His Labour Corps number of 155028 means that when the LC was formed in 1917 he was a member of the 29th (Works) Battalion Middlesex Regiment. This was a UK based company made up, in the main, of men medically unfit for service overseas. When the LC was formed this Battalion became the 5th Battalion, Labour Corps. This was also a UK based unit and was formed with the intention of being used in one or more of the Home Command areas. The problem is that within about a month of its formation the 5th Battalion was disbanded and its men sent to other UK companies. The trouble is the records of which company a man was sent to were destroyed by German bombing in 1940.
