gracksnip Posted 25 October , 2008 Share Posted 25 October , 2008 Hello all: I have a day-long layover in London in early Nov and though I might go to the IWM. While in the area, I thought I might have a look in a bookshop or two. Some have mentioned recent works on WWI battlefield archeology, and I wondered whether such specialised books would be difficult to find in a WH Smith or other chain bookshop. Any and all recommendations welcomed. THanks, JB
AlanCurragh Posted 25 October , 2008 Share Posted 25 October , 2008 In case you don't know, the bookshop at the IWM itself is very good. Don't know about others in the area though. Alan
Steven Broomfield Posted 25 October , 2008 Share Posted 25 October , 2008 Can't say I'm aware of anything. Motor Books (near Leicetsre Square Tube) is worth a visit, but it's a tube trip away.

Moonraker Posted 25 October , 2008 Share Posted 25 October , 2008 Ian Allan Bookshops has a branch a literal stone's throw from Waterloo Station. It specialises in transport, notably railways, but has a military section. Moonraker
Chris Foster Posted 25 October , 2008 Share Posted 25 October , 2008 Lots of Bookshops up Charing Cross Rd just off Leicester Square which sell s both new and second hand books. One of the biggest books shops up that street is Foyles, they have a large Military section or at least they did the last time I went. link http://www.foyles.co.uk/ Or one tube stop stop down from Leicester Sq is Waterstones just off Piccadilly Circus http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/...?pPageID=200003 They also have a large military book section. Halder Posted 27 October , 2008 Share Posted 27 October , 2008 Blimey. Didn't know that. Looks like I'll have to slide off work early one evening....... Sadly, their military history section has been halved (or worse) in the past couple of years. It used be awesome, now it's okay. Foyle's would be my recommendation; there's nothing to match it in London, if not the world.
gracksnip Posted 27 October , 2008 Author Share Posted 27 October , 2008 Thanks all for the valuable information -- now I just need to get across the big pond!
angelab Posted 28 October , 2008 Share Posted 28 October , 2008 The IWM's bookshop is excellent, very comprehensive, even with some trench maps on sale. There is a large, regular second-hand bookstall on the South Bank of the Thames, near the National Film Theatre (now renamed the BFI I think). I don't know if that has military material, but it might be worth a look. Angela
Kate Wills Posted 28 October , 2008 Share Posted 28 October , 2008 There is a small second-hand bookshop in Lower Marsh, a few minutes walk down the road from Ian Allan.
Robert Dunlop Posted 28 October , 2008 Share Posted 28 October , 2008 Sadly, their military history section has been halved... Foyle's would be my recommendation... I agree. If you have the time, it is worth visiting both. There are some differences in what each shop has. Robert
Ice Tiger Posted 28 October , 2008 Share Posted 28 October , 2008 As above, Ian Allen book shop, Waterloo road. Steve come out of Waterloo station by Mc Donalds & head down Waterloo Road, past the fire station pub, towards the Old Vic theater & its on your right just before the lights. They have quite a reasonable military section (for a small book shop) right hand side at the back & having purchased a number of books from there it gets my vote. Plus in answerer to the original question, it's only 5 minutes walk from IWM Andy
