IanA Posted 25 October , 2008 Share Posted 25 October , 2008 I see that Jean Giono has been mentioned a couple of times in this section: well, I have just finished reading (in translation) ‘To the Slaughterhouse’ and can wholeheartedly recommend it. It is a work of fiction rather than a realistic account of any particular action but is a compelling and powerful novel which juxtaposes the brutality of the poilu’s life at the front and the struggle for existence of the Provencal peasant. My copy is a paperback published by Peter Owen, ISBN 0 7206 1212 8.
