Ysolde Posted 7 March , 2004 Share Posted 7 March , 2004 We're unable to find the burial site for my great Uncle, Douglas William Lane Nichols. He was in the East Surreys and we believe he was awarded the Military Cross before he was killed in 1916. We think he was a Captain when he was killed, possibly at Guillemont. We have not been able to find his grave using the CWGC site, nor have we been able to find his name mentioned in the London Gazette. We would love to know where he is buried/commemorated, and/or details about his service history. Any information or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Ysolde. Terry Denham Posted 7 March , 2004 Share Posted 7 March , 2004 This looks like it is your man on the CWGC list - in a different regiment and with no MC. SDGW also does not quote MC. Name: LANE-NICHOLS, DOUGLAS WILLIAM Initials: D W Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Captain Regiment: The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regt.) Unit Text: 8th Bn. Date of Death: 20/08/1916 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 5 D and 6 D Cemetery: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL The MC problem may be a confusion with this man... Ysolde Posted 8 March , 2004 Author Share Posted 8 March , 2004 Terry, Thank you so much for this information. It never occured to us to add the hyphen as our family never uses it. (Small things make such a difference. It's a shame the search mechanism requires it to match information.) Kindest regards, Ysolde Lauruel Jasmine Salter Nichols & family. Ysolde Posted 8 March , 2004 Author Share Posted 8 March , 2004 Terry and all, We've since found that Douglas Lane-Nichols was awarded the Military Cross on 27th July 1916, for "Conspicuous gallantry". Thanks again. Ysolde.
Terry Denham Posted 8 March , 2004 Share Posted 8 March , 2004 Ysolde If you contact CWGC on casualtyenq@cwgc.org and give them your evidence for the MC, they will add it to his record.
Ysolde Posted 10 March , 2004 Author Share Posted 10 March , 2004 Thank you Terrry. Will they do it via e-mail or do we have to send it in writing? Regards, Ysolde.
Terry Denham Posted 10 March , 2004 Share Posted 10 March , 2004 Email first giving full details of what your evidence is. If they want to see copies of any documents you hold, they will ask for them. Be sure to descibe all your evidence and sources. It is possible that it is a simple clerical error along the line somewhere and a quick check by them will reveal it. This would result in an immediate correction. (although it would not show up on the internet until the next update). However, if the original info they received from the military did not list the MC, then it will be down to the quality and robustness of your evidence whether it is accepted or not. Remember that you will have to prove that the man in their database is the same man that was awarded the MC as well as the fact that the MC was actually awarded. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Ysolde Posted 24 March , 2004 Author Share Posted 24 March , 2004 Dear Terrry and all, We received some wonderfull news today. The CWGC has accepted the evidence from the Lnodon Gazette and is ammending their records to show his MC. His memorial will be updated sometime in the next 12 months. We're told he was a very brave, selfless man. We know his actions were not for glory or recognition. However, this makes such a difference to us and we honour his sacrifice, and the sacrifices of his comrades. I've attached a photo of Douglas. Yours gratefully, Ysolde Nichols.
