I have the "Pip, Squeak & Wilfred" medals from my grandfather who fell near Windy Corner on 21st October 1914. Two of the medals are inscribed

"Pte J Tomlinson, 2nd Batt, Manchester Regt. No 8888" and the "Mons Star" with the same inscription and army number but with the name "W Turner", his real name.

He is buried at Guards Cemetary, Windy Corner under the name Tomlinson and there were rumours in the family that he changed his name to join the army.

Can anyone explain why the medals, which I understand were issued after the war, should show two names in the one set?

Interesting, I can't say I have ever heard of this before. Have you ever searched for his medal index cards to see what is written on them?
