Guest Brisbane Bob Posted 11 March , 2004 Share Posted 11 March , 2004 My Grandfather William John Stacey has been identified from a photograph as being in the Middlesex regiment. No records seem to exist at the PRO army archives. As he was wounded and lost both legs and survived until 1946, there may be detailed records of him archived elsewhere. Firstly a hospital that specialised in patients who lost both limbs, which may or maynot be close to his home area which is Islington, Middlesex. Lastly he would have been issued a service pension at the time, would those have survived the 1940's blitz and be at the PRO? Any advice would be greatfully received. thanks in advance. Sue Light Posted 11 March , 2004 Share Posted 11 March , 2004 No records seem to exist at the PRO army archives. Bob Combining your two postings about William and Arthur Stacey, what has been searched for at the PRO? I would think that there's a good chance that there would be records in WO364 [unburnt documents], as they were probably discharged during the course of the war with a pension - have these proved negative? The service records should give at least some history of the hospitals involved, although it's extremely unlikely that any hospital records have survived for the period. They might have been treated anywhere, not necessarily near their home, and without knowing the names of the hospitals in advance, you would definitely be looking for a very small needle in a haystack [to say the least] One of my great-uncles was an amputee, being wounded in April 1918 at Aveluy Wood. His record in WO364 gave me his complete chain of medical care, from wounding, to discharge fifteen months later. Sue
Christina Posted 14 March , 2004 Share Posted 14 March , 2004 My grandfather Robert Tucker was also wounded and lost a leg, so if you get any info will you e-mail me as well, he lived in Balham. I have contacted the British Legion, the Red Cross, Haig homes, the limbless association. I am at the moment trying to trace him through the website for his regiment, may I suggest you try the same. Good Luck Christina
