Jon Haslock Posted 30 November , 2008 Share Posted 30 November , 2008 Very atmospheric. I think the battlefields always look better in winter.
zippo Posted 30 November , 2008 Share Posted 30 November , 2008 I bet the combatants didnt agree and to think that this is early winter;what must it have been like for the poor chaps . Was WW1 the first war that not stop/pause for at least part of the winter?

Was WW1 the first war that not stop/pause for at least part of the winter? I have read accounts that say that a good frost would 'sterilise' the battlefield and make movement easier as well. The thaw must have been terrible though, with the mud and the corpses reappearing.

bruce Posted 11 December , 2008 Share Posted 11 December , 2008 Tuesday this week down on the Somme was really very, very cold. I was taking some friends, none of whom had ever been before, and overheard, "I'll be glad to get back in the nice warm car." "Not realy an option to those who had to spent five days and four nights in a hole in the ground ninety years ago, though." YES! Result! At least two of them bitten by the bug.
