SMG65 Posted 2 January , 2009 Share Posted 2 January , 2009 Bought this from the Naval and Military for £7.99 and cannot understand how this book is not better known. I thought Junger's book 'Storm of Steel' would take some beating but this one runs it very close. Verdun, Somme, 3rd Ypres and the Marne 1918 are all described in vivid detail from the perspective of Bucher, an infantry Sergeant. Without attempting to psychoanalyse the actions of the soldier as Junger did in 'Copse 125', Bucher shows how a soldier can in a split second turn from a human being into a killing machine without pity, he kills as second nature, without thought. Highly recommended. Sean
