Guest Pete Wood Posted 24 March , 2004 Share Posted 24 March , 2004 Pte Harold Robert TREDREA, 10860 4th Regt, South African Infantry, who died aged 18 on 24.03.18. Pozières Memorial, France Name: TREDREA, HAROLD ROBERT Initials: H R Nationality: South African Rank: Private Regiment: South African Infantry Unit Text: 4th Regt. Age: 18 Date of Death: 24/03/1918 Service No: 10860 Additional information: Son of Thomas B. and F. C. Tredrea, of 22, Bean St., Kimberley, Cape Province. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panels 95-98 Cemetery: POZIERES MEMORIAL The POZIERES MEMORIAL relates to the period of crisis in March and April 1918 when the Allied Fifth Army was driven back by overwhelming numbers across the former Somme battlefields, and the months that followed before the Advance to Victory, which began on 8 August 1918. The Memorial commemorates over 14,000 casualties of the United Kingdom and 300 of the South African Forces who have no known grave and who died on the Somme from 21 March to 7 August 1918. I believe Kimberley is a suburb of Cape Town. If anyone knows how to find out more about South African soldiers (online records etc), I would be very interested. Guest Pete Wood Posted 24 March , 2004 Share Posted 24 March , 2004 I hope I have got this right, but the 4th South African Infantry were part of the Cape Town Highlanders and known as the 'South African Scottish.'
