Guest Pete Wood Posted 1 April , 2004 Share Posted 1 April , 2004 There were just a few casualties in the days before and after Smith's death. Nothing suggests that our man, or his unit, was engaged in anything other than trench-holding duties.
Promenade Posted 1 April , 2004 Share Posted 1 April , 2004 His number indicates that he enlisted in July 1914 Joe
j.r.f Posted 1 April , 2004 Share Posted 1 April , 2004 RACING TEAPOTS I cant add much to the story of this man.I can say that Clifton Wood was ,and still is,an up-market area of Bristol.Redcliffe,at that time, would have been mostly an area of tenaments. It might be that he was born in a hospital in Clifton Wood and was brought up in Redcliffe.I would suggest that his early,in age, enlistment was a way of getting out of,what could have been a very deprived background.I have no facts to back any of this up.I do have sixty odd years knowledge of the general area. CHEERS. JOHN.
