Sgt York Posted 2 April , 2004 Share Posted 2 April , 2004 I've just received the lastest e-letter from the Australian War Memorial, which included the following: 1. WHAT'S NEW ON THE WEBSITE Embarkation Roll, First World War http://www.awm.gov.au/database/awm8/index.asp The Roll contains fascinating details about approximately 330,000 AIF personnel, recorded as they embarked from Australia for overseas service during the First World War. The details include marital status, trade or occupation, religion and pay rates. _________________________________ Well done! the AWM (again) Ronnie. Andrew P Posted 2 April , 2004 Share Posted 2 April , 2004 Depending on the speed of your computer these may take some time to download. A great resource though and it's good to see that the AWM doesn't charge for access.
Will O'Brien Posted 2 April , 2004 Share Posted 2 April , 2004 Another triumph for the AWM (even if it did slow my computer down to the pace of a tortoise with a zimmer frame)
Guest Pete Wood Posted 2 April , 2004 Share Posted 2 April , 2004 The Australian attitude - and resources - is the benchmark for keeping/dsiplaying military records, world-wide. It puts the UK's efforts - especially the MIC debacle - to shame. Well done, Oz.
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 2 April , 2004 Share Posted 2 April , 2004 Peter, Don't forget the Canadian Records, which have been on-line for sometime. You are also able to download a certain number of service record pages for free as well. To be fair, the NA/PRO would have been better off spending the funding used to put MICs on line in either microfilming medal rolls or war diaires, or sorting out WO 363 & 364 aka soldier service records. The shambles these are in is largley symptomatic of having been blown up, set light to and drenched in water. However if you are talking about RAF & RN records then that's a different story. Ian.
