You might have the names already but do you want me to let you know the details of any Fiji people I find when going through the AIF embarkation rolls?

No worries Chris,

Clark's NOK address is shown as Urenville via Tabalam NSW.

I am not sure of the spelling of this town's name as it appears the same in the second war only spelled differently.

Thanks for those Christine. I had some info on Bailey but not his d.o.b. and I didn't have info on Staff Nurse Baillie either. I wonder if she was working at No.8 AGH in Fremantle before serving overseas.

Found another Fiji reference last night.

I already have a William Barnes;

Rifleman William Barnes 2nd Fiji Contingent, Fiji Defence Force enlisted 19 August 1915 R/15206 1st KRRC in Stratford, Essex repatriated 3 October 1916 discharged medically unfit after wounds 4 October 1916 re-enlisted 2nd KRRC discharged November 1916 returned per Athenic

Do you think it is the same one, and he enlisted in Australia as well as twice in britain? A glutton for punishment!

John Dean is new. Thanks very much.

The nominal roll gives an enlistment date for William Barnes as 22/03/16not 17, which means it can't be the same one. However I have another W Barnes who was exempted from service in March 1917. It might be him.

Hi Christine

That's a strange one as the embarkation roll said 20/03/17. I'll have to double check that one, but his number of 6914 indicates a very late enlistment for the 18th battalion as they only went up to the low 7000's.

My guess is that it's a good chance that it's the same William Barnes. Do you have the age of the William Barnes who enlisted in the Fiji Contingent?

Maybe getting his service record through the NAA website might clear this one up.

Cheers

No I don't have his age. All I know is mentioned here. I have now ordered the file.

Do either of you know where to find photos of Australian soldiers? Were they published in newspapers? Did the Aust army have individual photos of each man?

Chris,

Each Major City's Newspapers published photos of those who embarked to the war.

Many are idervigal photos but also included many group shots.

The only problem is searching for them, most Liberies have them recorded in a book/register in which you can check to see if he is mentioned in a news paper then its essyer to find them.

You should also be aware of a number of personal photos published in book form post war by a number of states showing large numbers of there men/women at the war.

Cheers
