peterhogg Posted 18 April , 2009 Share Posted 18 April , 2009 I have recently obtained a copy of this book. (I believe it was the subject of a thread some time ago) The panoramic photographs of the Somme and Ypres battlefields among others are themselves worth a look, along with a very informative text. The work also includes two cd-roms comprising some 200 panoramic photos. It is interesting to compare some of the panoramas to the present-day locations. In the case of Mash Valley, for example, even with the passage of 90 plus years, much remains recognizeable. The book is pricey--$128 CDN. I was fortunate to receive it as a gift from some colleagues. Cheers.
laughton Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 Odd that it is an OSPREY Book yet it is not on their site. It is here on Abe Books: http://www.abebooks.com/products/isbn/9781841197456 Must already be a collector's item?
SiegeGunner Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 It sounds as if Connor's colleagues have paid a premium price for a copy of the out-of-print first edition (with the panoramas on 2 CD-ROMs). A new, revised and enlarged edition (with the panoramas on a DVD) was published last autumn and is available in the UK for about £38 and in the US for about $57. peterhogg Posted 19 April , 2009 Author Share Posted 19 April , 2009 I better not tell them that; they may want it back. The inner cover lists the publisher as Constable and Robinson Ltd: www.constablerobinson.com, with a Canadian distributor. Confess I have never seen it at any major or specialty bookstores in Vancouver. It's massive, with some tremendous maps that correspond to the panoramic views. So far I have only made my way through the chapter on the Somme. There is, for example, a "then (August, 1915) and now" panorama taking in Redan Ridge, the Sunken Lane (looking remarkably similar today) the German Front line and part of Hawthorn Ridge. Cheers. stu Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 Connor, It sounds as though you have the first edition, which really is a superb book. However the new revised edition is truely outstanding with many more panoramas, with many of the being German it gives the reader a totally different perspective. Also in this edition all the panoramas have the convenience of being on one DVD. I understand that it is available on Amazon at a discount, if you have the opportunity of obtaining the revised edition you will not be disapointed. Can anyone advise on how you identify the updated version from what went before? I can see it listed from various suppliers all featuring the same cover, with prices ranging from about £33-£55. I rather thought this might be the case and I'm delighted to say this is the version I've now purchased. It'll be a while before I can get to lose myself within its pages, but I can tell the wait will be worthwhile. Thanks again, Dave
