ray hoggart Posted 7 April , 2004 Share Posted 7 April , 2004 My grandfather was shot and taken prisoner at Ypres, 22/23/24 April 1915. How would his family (or anyone) know he was a prisoner rather than KIA? The War Diary for his unit for this time makes no mention of soldiers missing etc. I am certain it was in the part of Ypres II called 'Battle of Gravenstafel Ridge' but would like to know more. Any suggestions where to start?
Guest Pete Wood Posted 7 April , 2004 Share Posted 7 April , 2004 Welcome to the forum, Ray. In most cases, the Red Cross would have informed the army, who would then have informed your family. If your grandfather was seen by his own troops, to be captured (or thought to be captured) then he would have been reported (initially) as "missing, believed to be held prisoner." There is a list of (mainly) officers who were PoW (published by the army bank, Cox and Co.) The forum is also in the middle of compiling a list of PoW's who had a report made out about them (just after they were released, usually). What was the name of your Grandfather, what unit was he with, and what else do you know about him?? The more info you can give, the more help/advice/info you will receive from the forum.
