Guest Pete Wood Posted 15 April , 2004 Share Posted 15 April , 2004 Welcome to the forum. Hmm, the AWM has him down as a Private - click here to see it. But at least you know when he departed Australia; a very early volunteer. He is buried at Tel el Kebir. During the First World War, this was a training centre for Australian reinforcements and the site of a very large prisoner of war camp. The War Memorial Cemetery was used from June 1915 to July 1920 and was increased after the Armistice when graves were brought in from other sites, including 15 from the International Christian Cemetery at Zagazig, where there was a Supply Depot. His record is not online, yet.

Guest stevenbec Posted 15 April , 2004 Share Posted 15 April , 2004 Mate, Their is a nice acount of the action involving Sgt Mathieson death in the History of the 10th LHR. It said that the regt was ordered to move to the ZagaZig area on the 17th March to protect the rail line. While there the regt sent out patrols over the next few days including a Troop from C Sqn under Sgt Mathieson sent to the Village of Sheibet el Nakkaria, where there was a run in with a number of natives in a standing crop. Sgt Mathison was shot in the chest during the action and was recommonded for the DCM. Cheers S.B

Guest stevenbec Posted 17 April , 2004 Share Posted 17 April , 2004 Yes mate, The date is well known as the 2nd Battle of Gaza 19th April 1917. The 3rd LH Bde was involved in the attack on the Atawineh redoubt during which the 10th LHR suffered about 100 cassulties. There is no mention of Mathieson by name in this part as he was just one of the many. S.B
