There was a Edward Bruce Hay in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers - but as he was a Lt in the middle of 1917, the photo must have been after this date (if it is the same man).

I believe Edward was related to Major-General Charles John Bruce Hay (1877-1940), Indian Army.

Hi Sam.

If you go to the mother site you will find the info you need.

1/4th Yorks and Lancs, 49th Division.

2/R. Sussex, 1st Division.

I forgot to add.

J. Marsh formerly served as 2875 Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards)

F. King, formerly served as 6252 Hertfordshire Regiment.

Chris.

Sam

A bit more information:

The 1/4th (Hallamshire) Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, was a pre-war Territorial Army unit based in Sheffield.

I have checked D. P. Grant’s history of the Battalion but unfortunately none of the men in the photograph are mentioned in it.

Regards

Mark

Guys, please don't assume that this is York and Lancs.

Chris has admitted that he was speculating. I'm not sure that King and Marsh are the same guys (both are NCOs in the photo, and I doubt were both 'bust' before they were killed).

I think the key to solving this is by identifying Sgt-Major Ball. Why can't I find him at the online MICs....??

Badcock TJ should be easy to identify on the MIC - but again I can't find him.

Lammas is far from common, but I can't identify this chap either.

No trace for the birth of R Mewitt.

If I'm not mistaken, the style of Bruce-Hey's tunic makes it early in the war....??

I suspect this is pre war, not only from the content of the picture but the mount and presentation. A gymnastic team maybe?

The cap badge does appear correct for the York and Lancs, any chance of a close up?

Cheers.

John I think you're right.

I've found a reference to a chap called A/CSM Instructor AG Lammas A. Gym Staff.

I hope this helps tie this pic down....

You keep nudging this to the top of the list, but John (Raster Scanning) has asked for a close-up of the badge. So how about it.....?? B)

Hopefully, this will help John - because I don't know what else to suggest.

I think your only hope is to wait until some more of the Medal Index Cards come online and see if you can identify the unit(s).

I have checked all the likely candidates (including Ball!!!!!) and I can't find a match with the surnames beginning with A, B, or C.

  • 2 months later...

I came across this old thread by chance, and don't remember ever having seen it before, but I think it is a photo of the Army Gymnastic Staff [later the Army Physical Training Corps] taken outside the Army School of Physical Training at Aldershot [although it wouldn't have been called that then].

My father was a Warrant Officer Instructor there in the 'forties and 'fiftys, and I grew up looking at remarkably similar images - there was one taken every year. Most of them are with my sister now, but this is one I still have [1944] - the background is similar, but taken further along the wall. Even if the one at the top of this thread was taken in wartime, the men could well have been home service only, and would not have medal index cards.

Sue

[Definitely raking up her past with this one!]
