Guest highpeak2609 Posted 17 April , 2004 Share Posted 17 April , 2004 Harry Mears survived the many bombings of the warship HMS Barham. I believed he set foot on Greek soil after the ship finally sunk, but I've no idea how to trace him from there. I thought I could go through his hospital records, but I wouldn't know which hospital he might have been sent to, unless someone else does...? Any help gratefully received. hmsk212 Posted 18 April , 2004 Share Posted 18 April , 2004 Hi HMS Barham was sunk on 25th November 1941 by U331 (KL Hans-Diedrich Frhr. v. Tiesenhausen). She was hit at short range by three torpedoes whilst North of Bardia (Mediterranean Sea), she capsized and exploded. The destroyers, Hotspur, Jackal, Jervis and Nizam rescued Captain Cooke her commander plus Vice Admiral Pridham-Wippell the commander of the 1st Battle Squadron and 450 of her crew. 861 men lost their lives. Try asking this question on a WW2 website and you may get more help from WW2 experts as opposed to this site which deals with WW1.
