michaeldr Posted 19 April , 2004 Share Posted 19 April , 2004 [some of the following photographs were taken during a Hamsin; this is a hot wind from the desert which fills the air with sand and makes visibility and photography less than perfect] Sergeant Wallace Hepburn Lorimer is remembered on panel 59 of the Jerusalem Memorial on Mount Scopus, Jerusalem. Panel 59 is at the extreme right of the first photograph, immediately before pillar at the end
michaeldr Posted 19 April , 2004 Share Posted 19 April , 2004 The first of the next two photographs shows the gate of the Mount Scopus CWGC Cemetery, looking through the gate and up the mount, past the central cross, towards the Chapel and the Memorial Wall. The walls on either side of the gate are decorated with stone plaques depicting the badges of all the regiments represented in the cemetery, including the Camel Corps. Guest stevenbec Posted 19 April , 2004 Share Posted 19 April , 2004 Mate, Wally was one of some 37 soldiers of the 1st Bn Camel Corps who were listed as "no known grave" following the 2nd Battle of Gaza. He embarked with the 7th Reinforcments to the 12th LHR being a 27 year old Slater from Leichhardt a suburb of Sydney NSW. He joinned to Camel Corps around July 1916 and posted to the 3rd Company 1st Anzac Bn. The 3rd Company was in surport to the 1st Anzac Bn's attack on the Tank Redoubt on the 19th April 1917 along with the 1/5th Norfork Regt. The company was committed to the fight around 8.30 am and was part of the troops that captured part of the redoubt. His body was never found after the battle as we had to leave all those men to the Turks after our withdrawal. S.B
