Salfordian Posted 12 August , 2009 Share Posted 12 August , 2009 When I went to the little museum next to Thiepval I bought a DVD that touched on the "Pals" regiments - its actually the film that runs on a loop at the museum. On the commentary they mention that in Salford they remember the 1st day of the Somme as "Thiepval Day" - I never knew this so contacted the local history library and salford history society, both of them were flummoxed. Does anyone have an idea about "Thiepval day" in Salford?
Chris_Baker Posted 12 August , 2009 Share Posted 12 August , 2009 It was mentioned in the "Salford Reporter" on 26 June 1920. A memorial service was due to be held on 1 July at Sacred Trinity Church, and the paper used the title then. Whether it was already known as Thiepval Day in Salford, not sure. Source - the excellent "Salford 1914-1920" by Roy Bullock, published by Salford Local History Library.

But the DVD does kinda imply it was celebrated (if thats the right word) for years

Salfordian Posted 12 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 12 August , 2009 The 1920 article expresses the hope that it would be, so presumably it was ... Personally, being a Salford lad as my moniker suggests its a cracking idea and its a shamed if it stopped soon after the 1920 suggestion.
Steven Broomfield Posted 12 August , 2009 Share Posted 12 August , 2009 Unless, of course, Thiepval Day was the oddly-named son of Mr & Mrs Day, of Salford ...
