ajsmith Posted 20 April , 2004 Share Posted 20 April , 2004 An MIC for a soldier I am researching shows a service number change from GS/16708 to G/16708. Does anybody know if there is any significance to this? He was serving with the Royal Fusiliers and had originally been with the 3rd Hussars (this regiment gets no mention on the MIC). Yorts Posted 20 April , 2004 Share Posted 20 April , 2004 AJ, I've already posted on prefixes at: http://1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?showt...181&hl=prefixes However, a GS prefix indicates a general service enlistment, and a G prefix indicates new army men and later in home counties regiments. The GS prefix would have been given before he was posted to a unit. Once he was posted to the home counties unit the prefix would have been changed. If he didn't serve in a theatre of war with the 3rd Hussars then he wouldn't have the unit mentioned on his MIC. Rgds, Alex.
