menright Posted 25 August , 2009 Share Posted 25 August , 2009 Hello, Is there a companion / compendium/ encyclopaedia-type work that will allow quick, (lazy) reference to events, personalities and suchlike for the Great War, sort of an equivalent to Dear & Foot's The Oxford Companion to World War II? The closest I can get to it seems to be Nicolson's version, although I would appreciate advice from The Forum before I start spending. Thank you, Michael
Philip Wilson Posted 25 August , 2009 Share Posted 25 August , 2009 Here are two suggested titles: 'The World War One Source Book' by Philip J.Haythornthwaite - Arms and Armour Press first published in 1992. Split into 7 sections with a useful index: History of the War for each Theatre, Weapons and Tactics, The Warring Nations, Biographies, Sources, Miscellanea, Glossary. A useful reference book. For an enclyopedia then ask your local library if they have 'Dupay and Dupay - The Encyclopedia of Military History.' The first edition was published in 1970 and contains some 75 pages providing a useful overview on the Great War with maps. Philip
