The 8th Seaforths were part of th 15th (Scottish) Division, and took part as an assaulting battalion of the 44th Brigade on 23/4/17 against Guemappe. According to the Divisional history, the battalion was kept in reserve at Arras, until the evening of 22/4, when it moved forward to take up its assault positions. If Sgt Miles died on 22/4, and his body never found, it would seem likely that he was lost on the approach to the trenches

Over 80 men of the 8th Seaforths who died in the ill-fated attack on 23rd April 1917, lie in the small Guemappe Cemetery.
