Army Service Corps & RGA

In researching 7th Siege Bty RGA I notice that some of the personel are members of the Army Service Corps.

What would their roles have been with in the Battery? I would assume drivers of the Steam traction engines and petrol motor lorries but what else.

How many would have been on strength of the Battery.?

I assume that they where not a seperate unit.

Thanks

Terry,

I checked 1918 War Establishments for different types of Seige batteries e.g Tractor drawn, Horse Drawn etc.

In all cases the ASC attachments were Drivers. In tractor Drawn batteries they provided the drivers for all Lorries (ammunition column) and tractors to pull the Howitzers. In Horse Drawn they principly supplied men to the Ammunition Column RGA men drove the horse teams that pulled the Howitzers.

A battery of 4 6" guns Tractor Drawn would have had 64 ASC men attached.

A battery of 4 6" How. Tractor Drawn would have had 37 ASC men attached.

A battery of 6 6" How Tractor Drawn would have had 50 ASC men attached

Thanks Joe,

I would assume that the above holds true for a battery of 6" BL Guns (not the Howitser but the ex naval gun on a land carriage)
