Does anyone have information about the executions of Pte A Troughton and Pte A Penn 1st Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

I know they were both 'shot at dawn' for desertion on 22/4/1915, being buried in a joint grave at Estaires Communal Cemetery.

Have looked in the books Blindfold and Alone and Shot at Dawn - but both have no details on these soldiers.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Shot at Dawn Page 50 has minimal info on the two....

Oram & Putkowski gives:

Pte Major Penn , 1st RWF, courtmartial - desertion 7/4/15, executed 22/4/15, age 21, PRO WO71/414

Pte Albert Troughton, 1st RWF, courtmartial - desertion 7/4/15, executed 22/4/15, aged 22,PRO WO71/413

See also WO213/3.

Penn disembarked with 1RWF 6 Oct 1914, number 10958 and therefore not a recalled reservist and not a special reservist.

Troughton likewise, 10853.

Both on Medal Roll 1914 star which records "no medal" and says "shot, desertion"
