I have a WW1 pair to Captain Geoffrey Sheringham who having previously served in the Cheshire Regiment in the South African war as an officer left for "financial" reasons in 1908.

He went to Alaska/Mexico as a rancher.

On the outbreak of war he was refused a commision "until suchtime as he was recommended for good service"and enlisted in the 9th Norfolks attached to the 71st Coy MGC as unpaid lance corporal prior to the 1 July, 1916, Somme battles, he was commissioned in September 1916 and served as a Captain,

I am trying to find out if he is mentioned or the unit was mentioned for its part in the battles and this led to his redemption, any assistance would be gratfully recieved, thanks,Paul

Your first stop would be the Unit War Diary at the PRO (WO 95 series), then work up the chain through Brigade and Divisional records, all at the PRO.

The 71st MGC Coy Diary is on WO 95 / 1625 but it doesn't start until August 1916 and finishes January 1918
