A suggestion for a sticky topic - 2nd-hand bookshops?

When on my holidays I always seek out second-hand bookshops in the locality.

It would be good to know of those with a decent stock of Great War related titles in stock so that a diversion is justified.

I don't know why this should be a 'sticky topic' but you should try Charing Cross Rd in London, there are several which are usually quite good.

The only really good second hand book shop that I know, and fits your criteria, is in Ieper. Charing Cross Road has a number of good shops but none of them specialise in Great War books or seem to carry much stock. You could visit Hay on Wye if you fancy spending a day trawling through the many shops there.

I was on Charing Cross Road a week ago, and have been going regularly for the past 15 years. For second-hand books it's practically useless - Quintos and Henry Pordes, just up from Leicester Square station, are the only two decent ones which comes to mind. Cecil Court, just off Charing Cross Road down from Leicester Square Station, has quite a few genuine second-hand bookstores, but many of these are rare and antiquarian shops.

If you want remaindered books, or just an excellent selection of new books, then Charing Cross Road is still pretty good - Foyles has a massive military, naval and air force section. Motor Books, now relocated to Cecil Court, has a fairly decent section but not as good I reckon as when they had a separate shop in St. Martin's Court. That said, earlier this year I did pick up a good, rare, second-hand book from them for a bargain price.

I think secondhand bookshop browsing has neared its end, I use abebooks mostly and got Passchendaele, The Day by Day Account for just less than 30 quid couple of weeks ago, I can turn that round for at least 70 with a bit of luck and a daft buyer. My tip is to walk into the bookshop, see what looks unusual, write a list of whats there and go sit in Macdonalds with the laptop looking up prices. same as medal fairs, i dont go anywhere without my netbook and dongle.

As a locust, sir, I take great issue with the inference that we, as locusts, would descend upon books to a greater degree than any other species. I insist that you withdraw your statement, sir, at your garden's peril.

If I ever find a really good shop, the last thing I am going to do is tell the Forum. It would be like a plague of locusts descending!

Jesse, as I am known by my wife as Agent Orange when it comes to gardening, your threat holds no fears for me. I can destroy a flower bed faster than any unimaginable mass of insects.
