Marc Thompson Posted 14 May , 2004 Share Posted 14 May , 2004 Rob, 1st Somersets together with 4th Division attacked a portion of the Drocourt-Quéant Line on 2nd & 3rd September 1918. This powerful trench system, which the Germans called the Wotan Line was built in 1917. From its northern extremity about Drocourt, it ran through Biache St. Vaast and along the Scarpe to the east of Monchy in the direction of Bullecourt, where it joined the hindenburg (or Siegfried) Line. During this period the casualties for the Somersets amounted to 15 officers and some 312 other ranks. Marc
robertb Posted 15 May , 2004 Author Share Posted 15 May , 2004 Thankyou Marc for that information. I wonder if you could give the source? There were a great number of men from Maesteg, a South Wales mining town, enlisted in the S.L.I., especially in the 9th and 10th Battalions. Cheers, Rob
