AndrewThornton Posted 14 May , 2004 Share Posted 14 May , 2004 The 1/6th South Staffords were at Bulford Camp, near Neuve Eglise, at rest following a stint in the trenches at Wulverghem. Tragedy struck the battalion on this day when Lieutenant Leonard Joynson, who had been recently appointed as Brigade Bombing Officer, was killed by a grenade that exploded during a demonstration at Neuve Eglise. He had tapped the detonator of the grenade against a table while explaining its workings and it blew up in his hands. He was buried at Neuve Eglise Churchyard.
