Hi William,my Great Grandfather was Pte Joseph Harte who also served with the 1st Garrison Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment, his number was 9254,it's every bit possible that they may of known each other.

Interesting problem here William, as it is always more difficult when men change regiments/reenlist

1. A Michael Ward enlisted in Connaught Rangers, 4th Battalion Special Reserve, as 4478 (not as 4498 on memorial). A fraction of his service papers exist on Ancestry

3. He landed in a combat area on 7 Oct 1914

3. He was discharged with a pension of 28 pence om 11 Mar 1915

4. This man lived at Main St, Ballinasloe, and appears to have signed for is Star medal when sent to him in 1919

5. Then you have Michael Ward 9221 in Royal Irish Regt who landed 5 Sep 1915 in combat zone (France according to his medal card)

6 He died 29 Oct 1915 in Gallipoli,

7. 1st Garrison Battalion. Formed in Dublin, 2 August 1915.

24 September 1915 : landed at Mudros, having sailed from Devonport on 6 September. Working parties were sent into Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, during October 1915. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, the Bn was sent to Egypt, where it landed on 5 February 1916 and then remained throughout the war.

8. He appears to have died in Alexandria, in as much as he is buried in a grave, rather than recorded on a memorial. Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery (originally the Garrison cemetery) was used for burials until April 1916, when a new cemetery was opened at Hadra.

9. My understanding is that Garrison battalions were raised from men too old/young/unfit for full military service. They literally garrisoned areas, leaving regular battalions free to fight. Egypt was a popular posting for them.

10 When was he born?

I cannot see that the two Michael Wards are the same, they might have been and someone just signed for his medals in 1919. Certainly there was time for him to sign up again in 1915
