Vimyridge Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 Hello Recently on another Great war forum, a collector asked what the FKS on the inside of his WW1 brodie shell meant. I looked around and could not find any listings for that steel maker.... Can any of you add to this list. Cheers Roger Roy My reply to to that collector is below... "If the Brodie Red stamp has the words "patent applied" then it's pre pre Aug 1916 , post Aug 1916 stamps were marked "patent no.1 18 03/16" I'm sorry I could not find a post 1916 stamp (see below for two examples of post Aug 1916 stamps. wainfleet Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 Roger I'm sorry I don't have the answer to your question, but (and I apologise profoundly for what follows) - what's this about another Great War Forum? What mythical beast could that be?? Surely there is only one Great War Forum!!! (hums softly, to the tune of Guantanamera:) One Great War Forum, There's only one Great War Forum.... (etc. etc.)
Wardog Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 I think I have read it is thought to be another mark of Firth and sons, but that make no reason for the K. I think it is quite a common mark though. Regards, Paul.
Vimyridge Posted 23 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 23 April , 2010 Mr Wainfleet Why I speak of our Canadian Great war forum...you know, us Canadians? Canucks? accross the pond,? Vimy Ridge?, First to adopt Motor machine guns, feared by the Germans for our Shok troop tacktics..HEE HEE HEE, just picking on you. http://www.cefresearch.com/phpBB2/index.php Regarding the brodie topic Here is a reply from Roger Lucy, who wrote the book TIN LIDS "In his article on the Mk.I in Militaria # 6, July, 1994, the British helmet guru, Marcus Cotton, suggests that FKS probably stands for Thos. Firth & Sons. However, he has recently discovered that apparently all Brodie and Mk.I helmets were pressed by Joseph Sankey and Sons, so the the initials simply indicate the steel supplier. Eventually all his knowledge will be distilled in a book. " Cheers Roger Roy
