I have the SB 2002 N&M rubbish edition: the ills. are appalling, and printed on gash paper which do the author or subject no favours whatsoever..

Is there an edition with legible badges, and, if so, how may one identify it on dealer's lists, please?

I have a copy of 'British Army Collar Badges, 1881 to the Present', written by Colin Churchill and Ray Westlake. It's a 1987 edition, and has plenty of good quality photos in.

However, the author himself says that the original book was rather basic . If I can pick up a copy for a reasonable sum, I will do so.

Yes, the reproduction of the paperback is thoroughly awful; only the hardback is useful.
