Martyn Gibson Posted 6 March , 2003 Share Posted 6 March , 2003 This is the longest of long shots I know, what with a surname of Smith but I'm going to ask it anyway. Can any one throw any light on a possible Military Medal winner called George Arthur Smith or Arthur George Smith. MM was awarded during the first months of the war for action around Mons. I don't have any further information on the individual concerned and the person who asked me is unsure if they can find out anything else at the moment, but if anyone could look up MM awards I would be most grateful if any of this could be confirmed and any information on the individual would be an absolute bonus if not a miracle. Thanks in advance Martyn
robwilliams Posted 7 March , 2003 Share Posted 7 March , 2003 Martyn, The MM was not instituted until 1916, although there is clear evidence that men from earlier actions were granted it 'late', I am not at all sure that they went back as far as Mons to look for a winner. Paul Reed Posted 7 March , 2003 Share Posted 7 March , 2003 Just to confirm that there were several MMs in the first gazette of MMs for actions in 1914; also several for Gallipoli and the WF battles of 1915.
