Having been researching my family history for some time, I have come across several genealogical websites and online databases which might prove useful to other pals. Apologies if you've heard them all before, but there may be some out there who didn't know of them!

Historical Directory Database Very useful database, includes the ubiquitous Post Office Directory and Kelly's, but can be slow and hence annoying - nevertheless persevere as it can yield results.

Free BMD Not 100% complete or accurate, but a very good FREE way to search the Births, Marriages and Deaths Indexes.

1837 Online This is the most complete online transcription of the Index of Registers of Birth, Marriage & Deaths from 1837 to the present day. It is not free like the BMD above, but it is excellent value for money and certificates may be ordered via a website link.

Scottish Genealogy The official government source of genealogical data for Scotland. Includes census information, births, marriages & deaths, and much more.

Old Maps Does exactly what it says on the tin.

Registration Districts in England & Wales This is a good tool for finding your way around the confusing civil registration systems used from 1837, and pinning down your ancestors' places of origin.

Registration Districts in London Same as the above, only for the London area!

Good hunting!
