Could anyone advise the exact location of 1st Hampshires on the last day of the Battle of Frezenberg 13.05.15 ? Quite a number of casualties on that day. Can anyone flesh out what happened ?

10th May - 1st Hampshire's moved up into the front line, relieving KOSB between Canadian Farm and Hampshire Farm.

13th May - Held line under heavy shelling and infantry attack. Bombardment started with daylight. D Company on the right got the heaviest shelling, but eventually after nearly 3 hours the German guns lifted off the first line to the second line and about 7 a.m. infantry began to advance. No Man's Land was about 300 yards across but this was more than the attackers could cover in face of rifles and machine-guns of the Hampshire's and Somerset's on their left flank. One forward trench had to be abandoned after the garrison of 40 had been reduced to 5. Two further advances were repulsed, heavy casualties being inflicted on the attackers. Enemy bombardment then resumed until nearly 2 p.m. when it gradually died away. The day had cost the 1st Hampshire's 90 casualties, D Company being particularly hard hit.

Since 3rd May 1st Hampshire's had lost 60 killed and missing, and 109 officers and men wounded.

Copies of some of the War diaries of the 4th Division and Vth Corps

for this time are available on-line at the Canadian Archives site, at the

usual place, here:

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/02015202_e.html

Search on 4th Division or Vth Corps. If you search on "Locations" there is a

collection of moderately relevant stuff such as the sketch below.
