clyde1912 Posted 14 September , 2010 Share Posted 14 September , 2010 Hi all I'm interested in reading any books that cover the clean up of the Somme (or any other area) battlefields after the war ended or any before and after the battle type books but from the 1920's or 1930's? Any suggestions? Many Thanks Andy
auchonvillerssomme Posted 15 September , 2010 Share Posted 15 September , 2010 The only specific book is 'After The Ruins : Restoring The Countryside Of Northern France After The Great War' Hugh Clout. Look to spend over 120 quid though. Mick

auchonvillerssomme Posted 19 September , 2010 Share Posted 19 September , 2010 Andy if you are serious about that route, give them a phone and ask if they will do a 'lay away' for you, give them a few quid a week and they may save it for you. The reason I say that is the book is a sought after volume and might go quickly at that price, if forumites spot it.

Andy Before forking out may I suggest you get a copy from your library via inter-library loan, which is what I did. It is a specialist book by a social geographer (I believe) and not specifically a military history, or even a history book. I found only one chapter of interest. It may be of more interest to you than it was to me, but prior to spending all that money I would have a look at it first.

Hodgkinson | the clearance and burial of the remains of British soldiers from the Great War battlefields | WWI Resource Centre David
