No he’s Canadian isn’t he Tom?  See the maple leaf collar badges and the Canadian militia pattern khaki jacket with its 7 close set buttons.

Good point!

I only said Leicester because I specifically searched for Leicester WW1 Soldiers on Ancestry. I should have spotted that myself to be honest and I feel silly that I didn’t!

You can learn from each photograph by scrutinising its details Tom.  There wasn’t even a Leicestershire related cap badge.

That regiment had quite unusually shaped collar badges Michel, that don’t quite seem to match the insignia on the soldier, but perhaps he’s wearing some general service badges.

I think he’s wearing this cap badge, probably with general service collar insignia, or maybe the badge with blades above.

hello FROG,
That's what I said.
The cap badge fits perfectly with the 184th Collar too (maple leaf with a rounded underneath).

A very smart and earnest looking young man of the kind we lost so many of as a nation.  Less than 25% of our young men served, the best that we had to offer, with around 10% KIA.  His face is haunting.  Thank you for posting.

What a cracking portrait.  That is the first time that I have seen a RWF London Welsh shoulder title.  Thank you for showing it.

Photo by E. Boot, 109 Mostyn St. Llandudno.

"London Welsh  12/3/15"  The card is signed, but my guess at a name brings up no records;  suggestions would be very welcome.

He’s wearing the optional ‘khaki peacoat’ later known as a British Warm after the most popular maker’s trade description of it.  It was made from 32oz Melton with a range of alternative warm linings.  There was a choice of two colours, Brownish drab which was a darker hue, or fawn to match the riding breeches that was a paler shade.

Many thanks Ken.

I found C.M. Clapham whilst trying surname variations late last night - Find My Past threw me a red herring as the first record I found gave his number as 225151* and his battalion as the 18th.

The 18th were 2nd Line London Welsh so he probably started there before being sent in a draft of reinforcements to the 1st Line 15th.  Perhaps the different number was associated with that, the service battalions had some oddities in their early days when the systems were struggling to cope with influx.
