That is interesting analysis. The record for Wilson showed him going in late 1916 from Khartoum to Cairo on escort duty so ties in nicely and shows the spread of employment.

Of general interest re 1stGBn Warwicks,

14036 Weaver wrote this letter to the Smethwick Telephone (edition 19/2/16 on FindmyPast newspapers).. An old soldier transferred to 1st GBn Warwicks same time as Wilson and to Egypt same time.

Weaver has a surviving service record.

Yes Charlie, I used your link and wasn't put off by the 'Kent' error.
And I agree with you about the relative quality of the scans.
I will certainly add any new information I find to this thread.
Thanks again.

The 1 Garrison Bn.RWR would have served in Egypt and Palestine from Aug 1915. They have three War Diaries at Kew for different periods of their service:

WO95/4444 (Aug 1915 to Mar 1918) as part of "Delta and Western Force". I would say that they were on Suez Canal and other strategic Guard duties etc.

WO95/4456 (Apr 1918 to Aug 1918) as "Force in Egypt", and ,

WO95/4732 (Sep 1918 to Jun 1919) as "Lines of Communication Palestine".

None of these Diaries are digital so you won't be able to pay for a download.

The above should be of interest but still not digitised!

Private Frederick Brookman Service Number 22995 of the 1st GB RWR.

Hi Charlie

I'm researching my  great GFR who joined the above on 1st July 1915 and was posted to Egypt. When demobbed he was 55 years old! I understand the unit was for young/old/unfit for service individuals but was somewhat surprised he was as old as 55! For information, he lied about his age when he joined up, stating he was 39. In fact he must have been determined to enter the war as he had been previously rejected by the Gloucestershire regiment a year earlier (Service number 10358) as 'not likely to become an efficient soldier, under para 392 (iii)(c)’. of the Kings Regulations.', when he stated his age was 29 (it was 49!!)

I would be grateful if you are able to fill in any facts about his postings in his service. any help would be gratefully received.

ps If researching, do not confused with his son, also Frederick Brookman (b.1887) who was a career soldier (Service No 23961) with the Royal Garrison Artillery in Salonika.

You have seen his re-enlistment record.

Findmypast have it and so should Ancestry.

Yes, I have thanks. Although the details on subsequent pages are ineligible/faded so I was hoping that you might have access to more detail. (like he was Sergeants mess and Company cook!)

Agreed, they are hard to read. Findmypast copy is better than Ancestry do I'll have a go.

Frederick Brookman.

After his initial volunteering Aug 1914 under false age 29 and his almost immediate discharge as you've explained, he re-attested 1915.

1/7/15 attests ,(age stated 39) to Gloucestershire Regt. Joined at Bristol and posted next day to the Depot. Service number 22995.

2/7/15 posted to 3rd Bn Gloucestershires

10/8/15 transferred to 1st Garrison Bn, Warwickshire Regt. New service number 13676.

20/8/15 to Egypt with the the 1st G Bn. He would have been in the same group as Wilson and those in a press cutting referred to earlier in this thread.

18/12/16 'Egypt' becomes Egyptian Expeditionary Force.

16/3/17 has a Medical Board at Abbassia that grade him PB3 (permanant base, medical grade 3 ?)

1/7/17 Granted Class II and Class I proficiency pay at Ismailia.

11/2/19 to IBD Infantry Base Depot from Kantara. Character sober, reliable intelligent, clean sheet. Had served as Company Cook and Sergeants' Mess Cook.

Granted 3 weeks compassionate leave to UK.

17/2/19 embarked at Port Said on HT Caledonia

31/3/19 back in England. Home service including attachment to 1st Garrison Bn Worcestershires in Dublin.

29/3/19 Discharge Protection Certificate issued in Dublin, showing his correct age 55.

9/4/19 Transferred to the Class Z Army Reserve upon demobilisation.

Thank you Charlie, that's very helpful and informative. It would seem that Frederick (senior) was out of 'relative harms way', whilst his son also Frederick (junior) (see other postings on this site) was fighting in Salonika. It is Frederick's (senior) wife I feel sorry for looking after the 7 children (1911 census) at home, although two of them may also have signed up (Frank Brookman b. 1890, William Brookman b.24/2/1893) - that is my next task 'to track them down!'. Thanks again for your help.,
