CarylW Posted 26 September , 2010 Share Posted 26 September , 2010 Has anyone read The Embattled Self: French Soldiers' Testimony of the Great War: Leonard V Smith, and if so, what did they think of it? I'd like to read this but noticed it's a bit pricey on Amazon. Aside from the ones on Gutenburg and Archive.org, any other (English) book recommendations for the French perspective?. I'd like to take one with me to read in France . Caryl
Dragon Posted 26 September , 2010 Share Posted 26 September , 2010 Hi Caryl There's a copy on Abebooks for less than the Amazon one. Still not very cheap, though. I've read 'Under Fire' by Henri Barbusse. Worthy, detailed, interesting, but I found it heavy going. That's probably my shallow mind. I liked 'The Living Unknown Soldier' by Jean-Yves le Naour. Maybe more - I'll peruse my library. (!) Gwyn
CarylW Posted 26 September , 2010 Author Share Posted 26 September , 2010 Thanks Gwyn. Read the review for The Living Unknown Soldier and I think I'll order it and I'll consider the Embattled Self you found on Abebooks Also noticed the Under Fire: Barbusse is online Here where they advise the reader to skip to Chapter 20!
