P. J. Clarke Posted 5 October , 2010 Share Posted 5 October , 2010 Hi Pals: I'm looking for some info on a Ballina solider by the name of Sergt. James Carroll, no. 6/4626, Connaught Rangers. His medal index card says that he was awarded the Victory, British and 1915 Star. His medal card is 5911.pdf. He was discharged to Class Z Army Reserve on the 22/4/191? (I would say 1918). He had been wounded a number of times and would he have received any other medals for having received these wounds. His medals have all gone from the family household and there is nobody from the old home left. Hope you can help. P. J. Clarke.
Murrough Posted 5 October , 2010 Share Posted 5 October , 2010 Hi PJ, Just had a look at his Mic on Ancestry,it states he was discharged to class Z resereve 22/4/19. There is no mention of a Silver War Badge which was awarded to men who were wounded or suffered sickness, but this does not mean he did not receive one as it was not always recorded on the Mic.He went to France on the 17/12/15 which would suggest he was with the 6th Connaughts as per his number. There is a date stamp 7/6/1985 on the Mic which suggests someone made an inquiry about him around that time. Regards, Damien.

archangel9 Posted 5 October , 2010 Share Posted 5 October , 2010 PJ, It is unlikely he was awarded a SWB. He was demobilised to Class Z not discharged due to wounds or sickness. http://www.1914-1918.net/reserve.htm John
mhifle Posted 7 October , 2010 Share Posted 7 October , 2010 Hi, He had previously served in 'C' Company in the 3rd Battalion Connaught Rangers from 10 Oct 1899 to 1904 Embodied with 3rd Battalion at Gravesend, England 5 March 1900 to 5 July 1901. With Regimental no.1703. 1901 census Person: CARROLL, James Institution: Milton Barracks Now Called Gravesend Barracks, Milton CARROLL, James, Soldier, Single, M, 26, 1875, Sergeant C Co 3 C Rangers, Ireland 5 March 1900 3rd Battalion embodied at Castlebar April 1900 3rd Battalion stationed at Gravesend The Times 29th June 1900 ‘Two Militia battalions (3rd and 4th) of this Irish Regiment are quartered at Gravesend just now, and every one gives them an excellent character. They were expected to be a particularly wild set, but they astonished the locality by setting an example of good behaviour. They turned out so orderly as to have effected a kind of reformation in the neighbourhood of the barracks, which used to be the resort of bad characters.’ Large numbers of Officers and men were dispatched to the 1st Battalion in South Africa between 1900 and 1902. 5 July 1901 3rd Battalion disembodied After the return of the Battalion and disembodiment the following letter from the Chaplain at Chatham was published in the local press. Sir, For over two months I have under my spiritual charge the 3rd Battalion Connaught Rangers. They came into a town noted for its drunkenness and vice, but I am proud and happy to say that, despite the temptations that surrounded them, the men have never forgotten that they were Catholics and Irishmen. They return home with an unblemished reputation. One would have thought that their prolonged time of service would have disenchanted them and made them for get their noble instincts, but their patience and resignation have been above all praise. Their splendid example will long live in the memory of Chatham. Yours faithfully H Taylor Catholic Chaplain St Michaels Chatham 1st July 1901 The Battalion did not perform Preliminary drill or training during the year 1902, it having been announced by the War Office that the Battalion with others who were recently disembodied would not be required to perform training:- Recruits who performed their drill on enlistment at the Regimental Depot head quarters were attached to the 5th Battalion The Connaught Rangers at Salisbury from 5th June to the 1st July 1902, during the annual training of that unit. 42 recruits assembled for Preliminary drill at Castlebar Barracks 27 April 1903 33 re- enlisted men called up 1 June 1903 30 recruits Instructed in Musketry by Captain L.M. Browne. The shooting was classed as good. 15 June 1903 The whole group was quartered in the Infantry Barracks, Castlebar. The Annual summer training with new recruits and re enlisted men started 29 June 1903. Proceeded by special train from Castlebar at 5pm to Oranmore arriving at 11pm and were brigaded for training with the 4th and 5th Battalions, The Connaught Rangers 29 June 1903 Composite Battalion of the 3 Connaught Militias. Battalion encamped at Phoenix Park for a visit from the King. 17 to 24 July 1903 This detachment left Oranmore by train at 7.45 am 17 July 1903 arriving in Dublin on the same day. They arrived back at Castlebar on the morning and evening of the 25 July 1903 The remainder of the Regiment left Oranmore by special train at 10am 23rd July arriving at Castlebar about 4pm. All the men were settled up with and proceeded to their homes on 24th July. 71 recruits assembled for pre drill at Castlebar 28 March 1904 14 re-enlisted men, 6 Sergeants, 4 Corporals and 8 recruits were instructed in Musketry by Capt L.M. Browne for 14 days. The Battalions shooting was classed as good. 2 May 1904 Annual summer training with new recruits and re enlisted men was conducted at Castlebar, rather than at Oranmore this year. This was the first time since 1894. 20 May 1904 This appears to have had a detrimental affect on the training, with three quarters of the battalion being classed as third class shots. Although it was thought more men were recruited this way 3rd Battalion was inspected by Major General Sir G de C Morton C B, Commanding the 3rd Army Corps and by Colonel L G Brooke CB, Commanding 88th Regimental District at Castlebar 22 June 1904 Except for their musketry the Battalion never went outside their Barracks. ‘Barrack’ square was indifferently performed, and the officers with but few exceptions showed a want of confidence in Commanding their men and steadiness in carrying out the various exercises. The musketry results have been most indifferent, ¾ of the Battalion being third class shots. The interior economy of the Battalion was satisfactory but the Battalion was well under strength in numbers. A higher standard of efficiency could be obtained if the Battalion trained at Oranmore where it would have ground to manoeuvre over, plus be under the eye of the officer Commanding the Regimental District and be stimulated of the other Battalions, the efficiency of which in field training is much higher.’ 3rd Battalion disembodied in a quiet and orderly way at Castlebar on 25th June 1904 During the training the Conduct of the men was exemplary in every way and the men left to their homes in a quiet and orderly manner and the entrainments were satisfactory. Regards Mark Well done my good and faithful friend. To have spent 2 years and 24 days at home recuperating seems a long time, so he must have been very seriously wounded. He was home from June 1916 to October 1918. He was wounded during the 174 days he was the B.E. Force in France during Dec. (?) 1915 to June 1916. Some of the dates on his papers are very faint so the Dec. date may not be fully accurate. Where was his regiment during this time? On his re-enlistment he spent 4 years and 231 days-- which was from 14/8/1915 to 31/3/1920. P. J. Clarke.
mhifle Posted 7 October , 2010 Share Posted 7 October , 2010 Hi, His age might have kept him back in the UK after recovering from his wounds and been more useful helping in training new recruits with the 3rd & 4th Battalions. Since it looks like he might have knocked 5 years of his age when he re enlisted in 1915, looking at his date of birth given as 1875 on the 1901 census and 1880 when he re enlisted. P. J. Clarke Posted 8 October , 2010 Author Share Posted 8 October , 2010 Mark: How can I thank you enough for all this typing. Really I do appreciate this fine effort. Just one question: Is there any way that I can narrow down where they came from in Ireland. I see a lot of what looks like Mayo names and it would be great if I could identify some of them. Thanks a million, amigo. P. J. Clarke.
mhifle Posted 8 October , 2010 Share Posted 8 October , 2010 Hi, Sorry but the 'place of birth' is just given as Ireland, but I think anyone listed serving with 3rd Battalion would be from the Castlebar/Mayo area at that time. Some senior NCO's could be regular's on a posting to the 3rd Battalion, I will try and do a listing with ranks which could help. Regards Mark

P. J. Clarke Posted 11 October , 2010 Author Share Posted 11 October , 2010 B.-G.: What can I say? What a fine bit of work. Thanks a million. I hope my turn comes around so that I can return the compliment. As regards Captain Garvey. On his lovely memorial in St. Michael's Church, Ardnaree, Ballina, his commanding officer issued these words: "He was a born soldier. An ideal company commander. The most fearless and faithful and dependable of men". He died in the clearing station behind the lines after being wounded leading his men before the Wytschaete-Messines Ridge. It is said here in Ballina that it was another Ballina Private, Moran, who carried him back behind the lines. It is also reported that although seriously wounded he made his will. Would that be right? P.J.C.
