bcerha Posted 15 June , 2004 Share Posted 15 June , 2004 The only real tangible evidence that I can identify from the photo is that he is wearing a bandolier and breeches so he is either from the Cavalry or from the mounted branches of the Royal Artillery (RFA or RHA) The additional prescence of the lanyard worn on the left shoulder would seem to indicate that he was perhaps indeed in the RA. Did he survive the Great War? - Hopefully he did, but if sadly not ,then his details will be recorded on the excellent CD Rom - "Soldiers Died in the Great War" which I am sure some forum member will be able to consult on your behalf. Sorry this is a bit wishy washy but hopefully it will help a it. Regards David
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 15 June , 2004 Share Posted 15 June , 2004 He is either 115619 Gnr John R Claxton RFA or 59329 Gnr John R Claxton RGA. Ian
bcerha Posted 15 June , 2004 Share Posted 15 June , 2004 Given his dress in this phot I would suggest he was probably 115619 Gnr John R Claxton RFA (Royal Field Artillery) for the reasons suggested earlier. Whichever the case he was a member of the Royal Regiment of Artillery to give its proper name and therefore known colloquially to all as a "Gunner" - irrespective of rank as we still are today!
