I queried Green's service number with CWGC and they contacted the Canadian authorities.

They have confirmed that 860006 is correct.

Hi Terry:

Thanks for checking Pte. Green's serial number. The National Archives of Canada has him listed as 850006 and if you look at his attestation papers, the 5 looks like a 6. The 179th Battalions block of numbers was from 859001 to 862000, which would confirm your findings.

I'll e-mail the NAC and ask them to correct the entry on their web page and I'll edit my original post to make the correction.
