Ken Lees Posted 25 June , 2004 Share Posted 25 June , 2004 I have a newspaper article from August 1917 which reads: "Cpl Ellis Dean Rice, 4th son of Mr Henry Rice of Aughton Street, Ormskirk who is serving with the B R Cable Section, Army Signallers in Egypt where he has been for the last eight months. Before enlisting he was employed by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company as an assistant linesman." Can anyone throw any light on the BR Cable Section, Army Signallers? It is not a unit I have seen mentioned before. Regards, Ken
Hoplophile Posted 25 June , 2004 Share Posted 25 June , 2004 The signal companies that served corps and army heaquarters were organised on a "modular" basis. That is to say, they consisted of a company headquarters and a number of autonomous sections, each of which could be attached or detached as needed. The sections, which could be wireless, cable or air-line (for stringing wire on telephone poles), were the rough equivalents of infantry platoons or cavalry troops. Each consisted of an officer, a sergeant, and thirty-odd men. A small number of section war diaries can be found at the PRO.
Tom Morgan Posted 25 June , 2004 Share Posted 25 June , 2004 I think "Army Signallers" is the confusing part. They were Royal Engineers. Tom
