alanlw Posted 5 February , 2011 Share Posted 5 February , 2011 This photo was taken by an RFC officer in 1917 or 18, on the way to or from German East Africa. Assume it was taken somewhere near Suez Canal (as we have a photo which shows Port Said) but may be wrong. Anyone any idea which ship and where it might have been taken? Sorry it's not a very good photo. If you can recognise it can anything be said about when it was there? Thanks for looking. Alan
high wood Posted 5 February , 2011 Share Posted 5 February , 2011 Could it be Aden? The location not the ship!
alanlw Posted 5 February , 2011 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2011 Could it be Aden? The location not the ship! Well, it's a possibility. Found this pic of Steamer Point Aden which shows lots of similarities. Getty images also have a photo with very similar mountains behind. Thanks for the suggestion. ionia Posted 5 February , 2011 Share Posted 5 February , 2011 The cruiser could be a ship of the "Eclipse" Class.
alanlw Posted 5 February , 2011 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2011 The cruiser could be a ship of the "Eclipse" Class. Thanks. Having looked up a few of those old ships your suggestion looks a real possiblity. Three of them appear to have been in the right area at the right time (see Naval-history.net), with HMS Diana perhaps looking the most similar to our picture. alanlw Posted 6 February , 2011 Author Share Posted 6 February , 2011 As you guys are all so good at identification, any idea about this ship? Again 1917 or 1918, probably somewhere not far from Egypt. Thanks for looking.
MikB Posted 6 February , 2011 Share Posted 6 February , 2011 The cruiser could be a ship of the "Eclipse" Class. Yes, the forward crowsnest nearly level with the twin funnel tops suggests that strongly. There seems to be some upward extension of the bridge structure, though.
